Billy Idol’s Legendary Career Unveiled in New Documentary, Featuring Rock Hall Nomination Highlights

A new documentary about Billy Idol, titled *Billy Idol Should Be Dead*, will be available on Hulu starting March 26, after its theatrical release earlier this month. Directed by three-time GRAMMY winner Jonas Åkerlund, the film explores Billy Idol’s journey from punk roots to rock stardom. It features rare footage and interviews with family, fellow musicians, and collaborators.

The documentary includes appearances from notable artists like Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, Duff McKagan from Guns N’ Roses, Pete Townshend of The Who, and Miley Cyrus. One highlight is an original song called “Dying To Live,” which plays a key role in the film’s conclusion, combining animation with clips from five decades of performances. Longtime collaborators Steve Stevens, Tommy English, and Joe Janiak co-wrote the song.

Billy Idol is also a nominee for this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Fans can vote for him starting February 25 at RockHall.com, with voting currently open.

From 1977 to 1981, Idol led the band Generation X, releasing three albums. He launched his solo career in 1982 with guitarist Steve Stevens, producing hits like “Dancing with Myself,” “White Wedding,” and “Rebel Yell.”

In 2025, he released *Dream Into It*, his first album in over a decade, through Dark Horse Records. The album reached No. 7 on the U.S. Top Albums Chart and No. 4 on the U.S. Current Rock Album Chart.

Billy Idol recently wrapped up his *It’s a Nice Day To…Tour Again!* in 2025, performing across the U.S., Europe, and Latin America, with Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and New Model Army joining him on tour.
