Guests, You Have Six Days

Six days is the sweet spot for being a good guest. After that, you risk becoming a squatter. Most people are okay hosting for up to six days, which honestly feels like a lot. After that, it’s time to pack up, grab your leftovers, and don’t forget your charger.

About 33% of hosts will start dropping hints when it’s time for you to leave. You might hear things like, “Wow, you’ve been here a while!” or “What’s the traffic like on the way back to YOUR house?” Meanwhile, 22% will just say it straight up. Gotta respect that honesty.

Parents are a bit more lenient. They’ll let their adult kids stay for up to 10 days, which makes sense. Moms usually love having you around, as long as you’re not moving back in with all your laundry. But in-laws, cousins, or that “fun” aunt who drinks boxed rosé at 3 p.m.? Five days is the max. After that, you’re pushing it, and someone’s running out of towels.

Funny enough, most people enjoy hosting. Nearly half want to be the go-to spot for gatherings. But 40% don’t even have a guest room, so good luck sleeping on the couch!

I have my own issues with this. My mom used to call long-staying guests “haunts.” So, I panic if I’m at someone’s place for more than two nights. That’s why I often end up in hotels. My sister, though? She’s the ultimate houseguest. She can stay for weeks, and everyone loves her for it.

So, next time someone says, “Stay as long as you want,” remember: they really mean “up to six days.” Unless you’re my sister, then the guest room is yours forever.
