When you share your art with the world, it takes on a life of its own. It belongs to everyone who connects with it and finds their own meaning. Take Incubus’s song “Drive,” for example. It resonates differently with many people, including those who remember it from the 2007 animated movie Surf’s Up, which features surfing penguins.
Brandon Boyd, the lead singer of Incubus, went to see Surf’s Up when it first came out. He admits he had forgotten that “Drive” was included in the film. “I went with a former girlfriend, and we decided to check out this movie about surfing penguins,” he recalls. As he watched, he saw a scene where the main character discovers how surfing can connect people.
Then, “Drive” started playing, and Boyd was genuinely surprised. “I was already enjoying the movie,” he laughs. Since Surf’s Up, Incubus’s music has continued to appear in various movies and TV shows, including the recent series Beef.
Boyd appreciates these moments, saying, “Those types of things are really cool when they get to happen.” It’s a reminder of how music can touch lives in unexpected ways.
