Soundgarden is working on a new album featuring Chris Cornell’s final recordings since his passing in 2017. Guitarist Kim Thayil shared an update on the album’s progress at the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
“We’re missing a member in making these judgments,” Thayil said, referring to Cornell. He emphasized the need to spend time learning the material and figuring out the best direction for it. Thayil is making these decisions with drummer Matt Cameron and bassist Ben Shepherd, along with the producers who have worked with them.
“We always think, ‘What would Chris like? What would he do? What do we like?'” Thayil explained. The producers’ insights are valuable since they also collaborated with Cornell in the past.
At the Rock Hall ceremony, Thayil, Cameron, and Shepherd performed together to honor Soundgarden’s induction. They were joined by notable musicians like Mike McCready from Pearl Jam, Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains, Taylor Momsen from The Pretty Reckless, Brandi Carlile, and original Soundgarden bassist Hiro Yamamoto.
Fans can catch highlights from the 2025 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in a special airing on ABC on January 1.
