The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights’ Becomes the First Song to Achieve Five Billion Streams on Spotify

The Weeknd is one of the biggest stars of the streaming era, and his hit song “Blinding Lights” just hit a major milestone on Spotify, surpassing five billion streams. This makes it the first song in Spotify history to reach that number. While most artists dream of getting one billion streams, The Weeknd, born Abel Tesfaye, has 28 songs with over a billion streams on Spotify. “Blinding Lights” has achieved even more, being one of only five songs to cross the 4 billion mark. Notably, The Weeknd has two of those five tracks: “Blinding Lights” and “Starboy,” his 2016 collaboration with Daft Punk.

In 2021, “Blinding Lights” was named the biggest hit in the history of the Hot 100. It spent an incredible 57 weeks in the top 10, including four weeks at No. 1. It also made a record 86 weeks in the top 40. The Weeknd shared that he was still processing the song’s success, saying, “I just count my blessings, and I’m just grateful.”

This new streaming milestone comes as The Weeknd celebrates his 2015 album, Beauty Behind the Madness, with a reissue campaign. Fans can look forward to new LP and picture disc versions of the album, along with three 7-inch singles. This album gave us his first two No. 1 hits, “Can’t Feel My Face” and “The Hills,” solidifying his status as a superstar. Be sure to check out The Weeknd’s music on vinyl or CD!
