Breakthrough Hits and Milestones
– 1958: Elvis Presley’s “Hard Headed Woman” became the first rock and roll single to earn a Gold certification from the RIAA. He would later rack up 171 Gold certifications, more than any other artist.
– 1962: Neil Sedaka hit No. 1 on the Billboard chart with “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do.” The song has been covered by many artists, and Sedaka even released a new version in 1975.

Cultural Milestones
– 1966: The Beatles held a press conference in Chicago where John Lennon apologized for saying they were “more popular than Jesus.” They performed at the International Amphitheater the next day.
– 1999: KISS received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. All four original members were there, and the day was declared “KISS Day” by Hollywood’s honorary mayor.

– 1979: Led Zeppelin played to over 200,000 fans at the Knebworth Festival in England, just weeks before releasing their album *In Through the Out Door*. This was their last performance in England with all original members.
