This Day in Rock History: August 16

August 16 is a significant day in rock history. It marks the debut of some of the biggest music artists and the farewell of others. Here’s a look at the key events that have happened on this day over the years.

1979: The Knack’s hit “My Sharona” was certified Gold by the RIAA. Released just two months earlier, on June 18, it became the band’s biggest success.

1996: Aerosmith’s album “Gems” was certified Gold. On the same day, “Draw the Line” reached 2x Platinum, and “Pandora’s Box” hit 1x Platinum.

August 16 has also seen memorable live performances.

1969: The Jackson 5 made their debut as the opening act for Diana Ross & The Supremes at the Los Angeles Forum, kicking off their incredible career.

1974: The Ramones performed for the first time as a four-piece band at CBGB in New York City. This show is often seen as the birth of punk rock.

1986: Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen returned to the stage at the Monsters of Rock Festival in Castle Donington, England, after losing his left arm in a car accident two years earlier.

Sadly, August 16 has also been a day of loss in the music world.

1938: Blues legend Robert Johnson died at 27, playing a key role in bringing Mississippi Delta blues to the mainstream.

1977: The “King of Rock and Roll,” Elvis Presley, was found dead at his home in Graceland, Tennessee. His funeral drew over 80,000 attendees.

2018: Aretha Franklin, the “Queen of Soul,” passed away at her home in Detroit. She is celebrated as one of the greatest singers of all time.

August 16 is a bittersweet day for music fans. Legends have left us, while others have made their mark. Check back tomorrow for more memorable rock history events!
