1970: The Velvet Underground played their final show with Lou Reed at Max’s Kansas City in Manhattan. They would later reunite for a special performance at their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1996.

1980: David Bowie’s hit “Ashes to Ashes” climbed to No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart. This marked Bowie’s second U.K. No. 1, and it held the top spot for two weeks.
