This Day in Rock History: July 31

July 31 has been a significant day in rock history, featuring legendary bands and artists like the Eagles, The Beatles, and Bruce Springsteen. Here are some key moments that make this date special for rock fans.

In 1957, a young drummer named Richard Starkey made his live debut at The Cavern Club with the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group. He later became famous as Ringo Starr of The Beatles.

Fast forward to 1968, The Beatles, with Ringo on drums, recorded the basic tracks for “Hey Jude,” one of their most beloved songs. A 36-piece orchestra joined in the next day, and the single was released on August 26.

Several memorable performances also took place on this day. In 1969, Elvis Presley kicked off a four-week residency at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. This marked his first live show since 1961, and he sold out 57 shows in just 28 days, making a huge comeback.

In 1980, the Eagles performed in Long Beach, California, but tensions between Glenn Frey and Don Felder boiled over during the concert. This was a turning point for the band, leading to their breakup shortly after. They would reunite 14 years later for the Hell Freezes Over tour.

Finally, in 2012, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played their longest show ever, lasting an incredible 4 hours and 6 minutes. He almost broke that record again in Philadelphia four years later, with a show that ran for 4 hours and 4 minutes.

From breakups to comebacks, July 31 is a day full of rock history that fans won’t forget!
