This Day in Rock History: November 1

November 1 is a special day in music history, especially for some of the biggest names like The Beatles and Elvis Presley. Let’s take a look at the key events that happened on this day.

1969: Elvis Presley scored a major hit when his single “Suspicious Minds” topped the Billboard Hot 100. Released in August, this was his first No. 1 hit in the U.S. since 1962 and marked a big comeback for him after focusing on movies.

1969: The Beatles also had a big moment as their album Abbey Road reached the top of the Billboard 200. This was their 13th No. 1 album, and it spent 11 nonconsecutive weeks at the top.

A couple of rock legends were born on November 1:

1962: Anthony Kiedis, the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He moved to Hollywood at 12 and later formed the band with his friends Flea and Hillel Slovak.

1963: Rick Allen, the drummer for Def Leppard, was born in Dronfield, England. After losing his left arm in a car accident in 1984, he made a remarkable comeback with the band two years later.

November 1 also marks the release of two important albums:

1968: George Harrison released his first solo album, Wonderwall Music, through The Beatles’ Apple label. It was mostly instrumental and showed the band members were exploring different creative paths.

1994: Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged in New York came out. Recorded in 1993, it became a huge success, selling over 8 million copies in the U.S.

November 1 has seen legendary artists shine and new stars born. Check back tomorrow for more rock history!
