Breakthrough Hits and Milestones
1945: Elvis Presley made his public debut at a talent contest during the Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show in Tupelo, Mississippi. He performed “Old Shep” by Red Foley and finished in fifth place, winning $5 and some ride tickets.

1999: At 59, Tom Jones became the oldest artist to top the U.K. album chart with new material. He was later surpassed in 2009 by Dame Vera Lynn, who was 92. However, Tom Jones reclaimed the title of oldest male singer to reach No. 1 with his 2021 album “Surrounded by Time,” released when he was 80.

Several rock legends were born on October 3:
1949: Lindsey Buckingham, guitarist and co-lead vocalist of Fleetwood Mac, was born in Palo Alto, California. He gained fame with the duo Buckingham Nicks before joining Fleetwood Mac in 1975.
1954: Stevie Ray Vaughan, a highly influential blues-rock guitarist, was born in Dallas, Texas.
1962: Tommy Lee, drummer for Mötley Crüe, was born in Athens, Greece. He co-founded the band in 1981, and they have sold over 100 million records worldwide.

1968: The Beatles began recording “Savoy Truffle,” written by George Harrison. It was part of the White Album, released on November 22.
