This Day in Rock History: September 6

September 6 is an important date in rock history. It’s the birthday of Roger Waters, a founding member of Pink Floyd, and it also marks the last live performance of Jimi Hendrix. Here are some key moments from this day in rock music.

1943: Roger Waters was born in Great Bookham, Surrey, England. He became the main songwriter for Pink Floyd after Syd Barrett left the band in 1968. Since 1999, he has toured as a solo artist.

1969: After a show in Memphis, James Brown, known as The Godfather of Soul, announced he would retire from touring the next summer. He later changed his mind and continued performing until shortly before his death in 2006.

1970: Jimi Hendrix played his final concert at the Love and Peace Festival in Germany. Despite bad weather and technical issues, he took the stage as the headliner.

Some notable recordings and performances on September 6 include:

1968: Eric Clapton joined The Beatles at Abbey Road to record lead guitar on George Harrison’s song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” This was the first time a non-member played on a Beatles record.

1997: Elton John performed a new version of “Candle in the Wind” at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales. The song became one of the best-selling singles ever.

2005: The Rolling Stones released their 22nd studio album, A Bigger Bang. The following world tour became the highest-grossing tour until it was surpassed by U2’s 360° Tour.

September 6 is a day filled with both joy and sadness in rock history. Stay tuned for more memorable moments in music!
