This Day in Sports History: December 17

December is an exciting month for sports fans. The NBA and NHL seasons are in full swing, NFL teams are fighting for playoff spots, college football wraps up, and college basketball tournaments are happening. December 17 has seen some unforgettable moments in sports history.

In 1924, the NHL had its first scoreless game between the Hamilton Tigers and Ottawa Senators. Fast forward to 1933, the Chicago Bears won the first NFL Championship, beating the New York Giants 23-21. In 1944, the Green Bay Packers claimed their sixth NFL title by defeating the Giants 14-7.

In soccer, 1957 was a big year when Alfredo Di Stefano of Real Madrid won the Ballon d’Or. Lev Yashin, a legendary goalkeeper, won it in 1963. The NHL saw rookie Barry Beck score a hat trick in 1977, setting a record for rookie defensemen.

Wayne Gretzky had a standout day in 1983, scoring a goal and five assists against the Quebec Nordiques. He did it again in 1986, netting four goals in one game. In 1991, the Cleveland Cavaliers crushed the Miami Heat 148-80 in the NBA’s biggest blowout.

Gilbert Arenas made headlines in 2006 by scoring 60 points in a game for the Washington Wizards. In 2017, Brazilian soccer star Kaká announced his retirement.
