This Day in Sports History: March 17

March is an exciting month for sports fans. The NBA and NHL seasons are heating up, MLB Spring Training kicks off, and March Madness takes center stage. NASCAR, Formula 1, UFC Fight Nights, and PGA Tour events also keep the action going. March 17 has seen many unforgettable moments in sports history.

In 1876, British high jump champion Marshall Jones Brooks set an unofficial world record by clearing 1.83 meters in Oxford. Fast forward to 1893, when the Montreal Hockey Club won the first-ever Stanley Cup. In 1897, boxer Bob Fitzsimmons knocked out Jim Corbett to claim the World Heavyweight Title.

The year 1908 marked a quick victory for Tommy Burns, who KO’d Jem Roche in just 88 seconds. In 1932, Howie Morenz became the NHL’s all-time leading scorer with his 334th point. Maurice “Rocket” Richard made history in 1945 by scoring 50 goals in a single season.

Jackie Robinson made his debut for the Montreal Royals in 1946, breaking barriers in baseball. In 2001, Reggie Miller became the first player to hit 2,000 career 3-pointers. LeBron James scored 50 points at just 20 years old in 2005.

In 2019, Rory McIlroy won the Players Championship, taking home a record $2.25 million. And in 2021, Emirates Team New Zealand clinched the America’s Cup.
