This Day in Top 40 History: October 31

On October 31, 2015, One Direction wrapped up their year-long On the Road Again Tour, supporting their fourth album, Four. This was their last tour before they went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016. Zayn Malik left the band just two months into the tour, but the remaining members continued to perform without him.

Let’s take a look at some notable moments in music history from October 31.

Breakthrough Hits and Milestones
1964: The Supremes scored their second of five consecutive No. 1 singles with the classic doo-wop hit, “Baby Love.”
1970: Led Zeppelin reached the top of the charts for the first time with Led Zeppelin III, featuring hits like “Immigrant Song” and “Celebration Day.”
2000: Outkast released their fourth album, Stankonia, which included the smash hit “Ms. Jackson,” topping Billboard’s Hot 100.

Cultural Milestones
1966: Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz was born in New York City. He later found fame as a member of the Beastie Boys.
1967: Robert Matthew Van Winkle was born in Dallas, Texas. He became known as Vanilla Ice and released the iconic song “Ice Ice Baby.”
1989: MTV filmed the first episode of Unplugged, which showcased artists in an acoustic setting and helped many musicians gain popularity.

Industry Changes and Challenges
1996: Slash announced he was leaving Guns N’ Roses, later rejoining the band 20 years later.
2011: Mariah Yeater filed a paternity lawsuit against Justin Bieber, claiming he was the father of her child. Bieber denied it and took a DNA test to prove his innocence.

It’s fitting that Vanilla Ice and Ad-Rock share a birthday on Halloween. That’s a wrap on October 31 in music history!
