Verve to Reissue Historic First Collaboration Between Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan

A classic album from saxophonists Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan is getting a vinyl reissue. Getz Meets Mulligan, recorded in 1957, was the first time these two legends played primary horns together. For the album’s first three tracks—“Let’s Fall in Love,” “Anything Goes,” and “Too Close for Comfort”—Getz played baritone sax while Mulligan took on tenor. They were joined by Lou Levy on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Stan Levey on drums. This six-track album is the only time Getz and Mulligan recorded as a quintet.

The new reissue will be available on October 24, 2025. Both Getz and Mulligan were important figures in the cool jazz movement, which emerged after World War II. Mulligan is known for his work with Chet Baker and hits like “Walkin’ Shoes” and “Five Brothers.” Getz helped bring bossa nova to the U.S., especially with the 1964 hit “The Girl From Ipanema.”

This reissue is part of Verve’s Acoustic Sounds series, which focuses on classic jazz recordings. Other artists in the series include John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, and Nina Simone. Each release is mastered from original analog tapes by Ryan K. Smith and overseen by Chad Kassem, CEO of Acoustic Sounds. Getz’s albums Sweet Rain and Getz Au Go Go, along with Mulligan’s Night Lights, are also available in the series. Check out the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series on vinyl now!
