Sea Girls have shared their brand new single “Hometown”, unveiling the hook-filled track with a first play on BBC Radio 1.
Written on the first day the band’s frontman Henry Camamile spent at home during the pandemic, the song encapsulates the spirit of the upcoming album Homesick, focusing on his teenage years in the flatlands of Lincolnshire.
““Hometown” is one of the most important songs I’ve written. It defines my philosophy,” Camamile said in a press release. “While writing songs for the new album, I had this intense love for life. “Hometown” is about people I knew growing up that aren’t around anymore. I’m saying ‘I see you’ – it’s a nod to them. I’m grateful for life and I am not going to jeopardize it in any way.”
As well as the epic new single, Sea Girls has also launched a special mini-documentary, Homesick At Night For Brixton. Directed by the band’s friend and long-time collaborator Thomas Davis, it features fan interviews and live performance clips from the group’s recent sold-out headline show at London’s O2 Academy Brixton.
“Tonight’s about London,” Camamile can be heard telling a raucous crowd at the iconic venue in a trailer for the documentary.
“Hometown” follows previous singles “Again Again” and “Sick”, both of which will also feature on the follow-up to Sea Girls’ 2020 debut album Open Up Your Head. Homesick was produced by Hundred Reasons guitarist and singer Larry Hibbitt, while renowned producer Jacknife Lee (The Killers, R.E.M., U2) also contributed to the record’s production. Jonny Coffer (Panic! At The Disco, Ellie Goulding) and Cass Lowe (Chance The Rapper, Charli XCX) also worked on the record.
“Imagine us locked down in the studio in rainy Brixton working with the producers remotely on the album in California’s Topanga Canyon,” Camamile said of making Homesick. “That clashing of worlds is the sound of this record, the DNA. Making an album this way, remotely and 5000 miles apart, was a crazy idea and shouldn’t have worked, but it did.”
Sea Girls’ Homesick will be released on January 14 and available for pre-order.
