$Tragic news has emerged from the disaster zone in Venezuela, where all four members of the rising local nü-metal and alternative rap-rock band Van Der Dijs have been confirmed dead following the massive earthquakes that rocked the country's north-central coastline. The band—vocalist Manuel van Der Dijs, guitarist Gabriel Gómez, bassist Xander Hernández, and drummer Abraham Foucault—were inside the Costamar II building in the heavily impacted Tanaguarena district of La Guaira when the disaster struck. According to local media outlet Últimas Noticias, the young musicians were in the middle of a rehearsal session when the consecutive 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes hit, triggering a sudden structural collapse that trapped them beneath the rubble. Emergency Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) teams later located and recovered the musicians from the site. The tragedy cuts short a rapidly ascending career for the group, who formed in 2024 and had just broken out nationally following a standout appearance at the Nuevas Bandas Festival. Just five days prior to the earthquake, Van Der Dijs had celebrated a triumphant, sold-out headlining performance at the Experimental Hall of the Modern Art Center (CCAM) in Caracas. The band had been actively promoting their newest single, "15 Minutes," and were scheduled to play a heavily anticipated concert on June 27th, followed by a string of national tour dates in Valencia and Punto Fijo. The devastating losses within the Venezuelan music scene reflect a fraction of a massive, escalating humanitarian crisis. The United Nations and local authorities have confirmed that the death toll has passed 1,700 people, with over 43,000 individuals still unaccounted for as multi-national search teams race against time. The double-fault rupture completely leveled over 2,500 structures across seven states—including the total destruction of a hotel housing recently deported individuals—leaving an estimated 16,000 citizens homeless.
