Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson hasn't minced words when it comes to rock singers who refuse to hang up the microphone after their voices have failed them. Speaking with Kerrang! during the opening week of the band's massive 50th Anniversary Run for Your Lives World Tour—their first major outing since the departure of longtime drummer Nicko McBrain in late 2024—the legendary vocalist addressed a recent argument he had with a journalist who insisted legendary singers should keep performing regardless of vocal decline.

"I said, ‘Look, there are loads of singers whose voices are shot and everybody knows it,’" Dickinson revealed. "He goes, 'Yeah, but they're legends.’ They're not fucking legends. They're people who can't sing anymore. When they were singing, they were legends. When they can't sing anymore, they're not legends anymore." The frontman made it clear that he would immediately step away from the stage if he could no longer deliver a world-class performance, stating, "I don't know how people get onstage when they can't do it anymore."

Even when the day comes that his touring years are behind him, Dickinson doesn't plan to sit idle, noting he will shift his focus to writing books and staying creative. As for the immediate future of Iron Maiden after their current anniversary run, Dickinson confessed he would personally prefer tracking a new studio album over another grueling trek, highlighting a core personality difference with his longtime bandmate. "Steve [Harris] is the other way around," Dickinson explained. "He will tour and tour and tour and tour until he probably dies onstage. Touring is fun, but it's not new. I'm a creative bunny and I like making new, new things."

In the meantime, Dickinson is already writing the follow-up to his 2024 solo album The Mandrake Project, with Harris praising the new material as some of the best he has ever heard from the singer.
