$he historic 1975 Gibson Les Paul guitar belonging to the late founding KISS guitarist Ace Frehley has officially been sold for a staggering $512,000. The monumental sale took place as part of the prestigious "Music Icons" series hosted by Julien's Auctions at the Hard Rock Cafe Times Square in New York City during a two-day live event on May 29 and May 30. The legendary instrument, which served as Frehley's constant companion on stage and in the studio more than any other guitar in his arsenal, met its original pre-auction expectations of fetching between $400,000 and $600,000. Several other pieces of Frehley memorabilia easily soared past their initial estimates at the event, including his 1997 Super Bowl XXXIII stage-played Gibson Signature Les Paul Custom ($57,600), his 1996 reunion tour light show Custom Les Paul Jr. ($57,600), and his iconic stage-worn "Destroyer" costume ($51,200). The landmark auction comes in the wake of the rock community continuing to mourn the legendary "Spaceman," who passed away last October at the age of 74. According to reports from the Morris County Medical Examiner, Frehley's accidental death was caused by blunt-trauma head injuries, including a skull fracture and a subdural hematoma, sustained during a fall at his home. After a second domestic fall led to a severe brain bleed, Frehley was placed on life support in Morristown, New Jersey, where his family ultimately made the heartbreaking decision to remove him from a ventilator.
