$Mastodon have released a raw, deeply personal 30-minute mini-documentary titled The Mastodon in the Room, addressing the painful intersection of parting ways with co-founder Brent Hinds and his subsequent tragic death. The progressive sludge metal icons have spent nearly a year grieving Hinds, who died in a fatal motorcycle accident on August 20, 2025, at the age of 51. However, his passing occurred during a volatile period; Hinds had shockingly split from the band months prior and had been frequently airing his displeasure with his former bandmates online. In the new film, remaining core members Troy Sanders, Brann Dailor, and Bill Kelliher sit down together to watch archival footage and pull back the curtain on the internal fractures that forced their hand, revealing that their decision to let Hinds go was an act of desperate tough love. The band did not shy away from discussing the dark realities that plagued their final years together, pointing to Hinds' escalating battle with alcohol and a hard-partying lifestyle that severely impacted their live performances. Sanders noted that the touring cycle for their album Hushed & Grim marked the weakest band solidarity they had experienced in a decade. After numerous daytime, sober interventions pleading with Hinds to prioritize his health and happiness failed, Sanders finally called a 1:00 PM band meeting to read a letter outlining their collective exhaustion. Halfway through the reading, Hinds stood up and walked out of the practice space—marking the last time Sanders ever saw him alive. Both Dailor and Sanders expressed the crushing weight of knowing they never got to bury the hatchet. The bandmates admitted they fully expected the termination to serve as a wake-up call, assuming that after a few months of Hinds "talking shit on the internet," they would eventually cross paths, laugh, hug it out, and reconcile just as they had thousands of times before.
