FLASHBACK: Tina Turner and Mick Jagger at Live Aid

Tina Turner, the iconic singer and two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, has passed away at the age of 83. Her legacy is indisputable, but here in Philadelphia there’s a standout moment that solidified her as the Queen of Rock n’ Roll in our eyes.

Our city was in the global spotlight when Live Aid was broadcast on July 13th, 1985. Philly hosted some of the biggest names in music: Tom Petty, Black Sabbath, Phil Collins and many more. WMMR was at JFK Stadium with complete concert coverage.

A highlight of the event for many was the moment that Tina Turner joined Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones for “State of Shock” and “It’s Only Rock n’ Roll”. Their chemistry was as blazing hot as the weather that day, and Tina’s full dynamic range was on display in this brief but unforgettable performance.

An official statement says that Tina Turner “died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model.”
