Brian Eno Launches Sonos Radio Station, ‘The Lighthouse,’ With Unreleased Music

Brian Eno has debuted The Lighthouse, a new station on Sonos Radio HD, with plans to share hundreds of new and unreleased tracks from throughout his 50-plus-year career. The three-part program begins with “Program 1,” in which Eno discusses the previously unreleased material and his motivations for opening his archive. The music on the broadcast will be randomly sequenced, as opposed to curated.

In a statement, Eno said of the new station: “The music that will be broadcast from The Lighthouse covers a pretty broad period. The earliest track we have at the moment is from 1990. We will be adding more pieces as time goes on. New pieces will be entering the mix and some of that will go back even further. You will be listening to a sequence of tracks which will be randomly generated, chosen by chance so there is the possibility of odd, I hope exciting collisions—things that are very slow next to things that are very fast next to things that have no tempo, no pulse at all.”

The Lighthouse joins artist-curated Sonos Radio stations from Thom Yorke, D’Angelo, FKA twigs, Björk, and the Chemical Brothers. You can listen to them on Mixcloud or on the Sonos app.

Back in April, Eno contributed to Playlists For Earth, which used the power of music to address climate change issues. With climate change reaching a critical point in the next 10 years, Playlists For Earth challenged creatives (artists, actors, influencers, organizations) to use playlists to ignite conversations around environmental action.

The song titles on each playlist, when read as a sentence, communicated a powerful message about the climate crisis. Created by environmental charity ClientEarth, the campaign allowed the music world to start important conversations with fans – about action on climate change and hope for a better future. The project launched with support from Eno, Coldplay, Anna Calvi, alt-J, Francisca Valenzuela, Tom Misch, and more.
