Duran Duran released a cover of David Bowie’s classic song “Five Years” in honor of what would’ve been the late artist’s 74th birthday.
In an interview with People about the cover, singer Simon Le Bon said, “When we got the ‘Ziggy Stardust’ LP and put the needle in the groove, our first taste of its perfection was the song ‘Five Years.’ I can’t begin to explain how honored I feel for Duran Duran to be given the opportunity to perform this icon, and to place our name alongside Bowie’s for this commemoration of his music.”
Further detailing Bowie’s influence on himself, Le Bon added, “He is the reason why I started writing songs. Part of me still can’t believe in his death five years ago, but maybe that’s because there’s a part of me where he’s still alive and always will be.”
Duran Duran will perform “Five Years” live tonight (January 8) during the livestream event “A Bowie Celebration: Just For One Day!”. In addition to Duran Duran, the all-star event will feature a stacked lineup of musicians and other celebrities including Trent Reznor, Adam Lambert, Billy Corgan, Perry Farrell, Lzzy Hale, Ian Hunter, Joe Elliott, Atticus Ross, Gavin Rossdale, Peter Frampton, Tony Visconti, Ricky Gervais, Boy George and a supergroup dubbed Ground Control comprised of Slipknot/Stone Sour’s Corey Taylor, Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins and Jane’s Addiction’s Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney.
Virtual tickets for “A Bowie Celebration: Just For One Day!” begin at $25, with additional packages available featuring exclusive merch and other experiences. From every virtual ticket sold, $2 will be donated to Save the Children, an organization Bowie supported for many years and famously raised funds for during his 1997 50th birthday concert held at Madison Square Garden.
