Fletcher Reimagines Katy Perry Classic On ‘Girls Girls Girls’

Rising singer-songwriter Fletcher has reimagined Katy Perry’s “I Kissed A Girl” on her new single “girls girls girls,” using some lyrics from the original to tell her own coming-of-age story.

“I kissed a girl and I liked it/Sipped her like an old fashioned,” the New Jersey pop star sings on the chorus to the same melody as Perry’s 2008 hit. “I kissed a girl and she liked it/It’s better than I imagined.”

“I remember my mom was dropping me off at school one day in 2008 and “I Kissed a Girl” came on the radio, and my mom kind of gasped at the lyrics,” Fletcher says. “I had this moment in my head where I was like, ‘I think I might like girls.’ In a lot of ways that song really marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of self-exploration and coming into my queerness and learning how to express my truth in a bold and unapologetic way.

“‘Girls girls girls’ is the freedom and the celebration I’ve been craving my whole life, and a way for me to share my own perspective and journey while honoring a song that empowered me to embark on it in the first place.”

The track was produced by Kito, whom Fletcher previously worked with on her gold-certified single “Bitter.” It follows the critically-lauded EP The S(ex) Tapes, which was released last year and saw the rising star share – as she told Clash – an “honest representation of what it is like to love somebody, have such a connection, but also have all these questions.”

Last year, Fletcher also contributed to the soundtrack of the Oscar-winning movie Promising Young Woman. She released the track “Last Laugh” as part of the compilation, which also featured songs by Charli XCX, Donna Missal, Muna, Sky Ferreira, and more. More recently, she was nominated for a 2021 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Breakthrough Music Artist.
