Friends and frequent collaborators Machine Gun Kelly and Travis Barker have teamed up again to record a cover of Edwyn Collins’ 1994 hit “A Girl Like You.” The song can be heard in the latest trailer for Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming series Paradise City.
Kelly and Barker offer a completely different take on the song – slowing it down and injecting it with a darkly ominous tone.
A spin-off of American Satan, Paradise City follows “a rock star with ties to the occult and a young rookie kid who idolizes him” as they “collide through their broken homes built by the music business.”
The show, which premieres this Thursday, stars Black Veil Brides frontman Andy Biernsack and Ben Bruce of Asking Alexandria, alongside Cameron Boyce, Matt Pinfield, Bella Thorne, Drea De Matteo, Fairuza Balk, and Olivia Culpo, among others.
In a director’s note, Ash Avildsen (who also created and wrote the series) shared that “almost everything in Paradise City is inspired by real events I have experienced growing up in an unorthodox single mom household as a kid estranged from his famous father and then my adult life becoming self-made in the ruthless music industry. Supernatural elements that have guided and misguided my life ever since moving to Los Angeles are also prevalent throughout the tale.”
Kelly and Barker, meanwhile, have stayed busy promoting the former artist’s latest album, Tickets To My Downfall. Executive produced by Barker, the title was an artistic departure for the artist, who moved away from hip-hop and, instead, into pop-punk territory. A critical and commercial success, Tickets To My Downfall marked Kelly’s first No.1 record on the Billboard 200. In addition to Barker, the album featured such guests as Halsey, Trippie Redd, Iann Dior, and Blackbear, while a deluxe edition included contributions from Yungblud and Bert McCracken of The Used.
