Elton John is on his way to getting his first number one song in the U.K. in nearly 20 years, but Ed Sheeran is in the way. However, he’s happy to get out of Sir Elton’s way.
Sheeran took to social media and shared, “@eltonjohn is so close to knocking me off the #1 spot in the U.K. It will be his first number one in almost twenty years and I really want it to happen. Please go buy/stream/download Cold Heart with @dualipa now, 15 weeks at #1 was more than I ever expected anyway, love you all. Who doesn’t wanna be knocked off by Elton anyway?”
Sheeran’s past two singles — “Bad Habits” and “Shivers” have collectively spent the past 15 weeks atop the U.K. charts. Last week, “Cold Heart” — John’s single with Dua Lipa from his new album The Lockdown Sessions — came in at number two. The track is a clever disco mashup of four Sir Elton songs: “Rocket Man,” “Sacrifice,” “Kiss The Bride” and “Where’s the Shoorah?”
John’s last U.K. number one came in 2003 with the remix of “Are You Ready For Love” featuring Ashley Beedle.
