Jessie Reyez has revealed a new single, “Psilocybin & Daisies.” The track, which samples The Smashing Pumpkins’ “1979,” will appear on her forthcoming third studio album, Paid In Memories. The record arrives on March 28th.
The Canadian-Colombian singer-songwriter released her most recent record, Yessie, in 2022. Since then, she’s opened on tours for Billie Eilish, Sam Smith and Jhené Aiko; released singles with Miguel and 6lack; published a debut book of poetry, Words of a Goat Princess; and earned a 2023 nomination for Canada’s top music honors, the Polaris prize and the Juno Awards. In 2024, she appeared alongside Kacey Musgraves, Daniel Caesar and more on the soundtrack EP to the biopic Bob Marley: One Love—Reyez contributed a cover of “Is This Love.”
In a 2022 interview with Refinery29, Reyez elaborated on her songwriting process, and what keeps her inspired to release music. As she explained (and as the title of her new record seems to hint at), the not-so-healed scars of the past are a key motivator to picking up the pen again and again.
“I write from a dark place because that’s just when I get motivated to do so — when I go through depression, or when I go through trauma or fuckery,” she said. “Sometimes we as humans want to pick scabs, or we hear an old song that feels like it opened a wound that hasn’t fully healed yet, or you find a t-shirt that you thought you had thrown away. This is that for me.”
