Mastodon’s Brann Dailor Inspires Machines to Embrace Emotion with Synth-Infused Arcadea Side Project

Brann Dailor, the drummer and co-vocalist of Mastodon, is no stranger to concept albums. His latest project, Arcadea, takes a bold step into hard sci-fi with their new album, *The Exodus of Gravity*. The story, created by band member Core Atoms, is set 5 billion years in the future, long after humans have vanished.

In this futuristic tale, machines become infected with spores that make them feel a connection to organic life, leading them to experience love for the first time. Dailor explains, “There’s these machines that are infected with these spores that give them this attachment to organic life, and it starts to make them human.”

To match this unique story, Dailor trades Mastodon’s heavy metal riffs for synth sounds in Arcadea. He describes the shift: “It’s like taking a weird, heavy rock album and just replacing the guitars with keyboards.” He believes that playing riffs on keyboards opens up new creative paths that might not happen with a guitar.

In *The Exodus of Gravity*, Dailor sings and plays drums, but he won’t be doing both live. He decided to focus solely on vocals for the upcoming tour, saying, “I’m not gonna be playing drums for this, it’d be a nightmare!”

*The Exodus of Gravity* was released on Friday, and fans can look forward to seeing Dailor perform with Arcadea soon.
