Bruce Springsteen will return to the stage this week when his show, Springsteen on Broadway, begins its second run on June 26 at Jujamcyn’s St. James Theatre. Fortunately, if anything happens to The Boss, Nathan Lane will be in the wings to fill in.

Lane joked about how he’s Springsteen understudy in a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

“I’m just one bad seafood dinner away from becoming The Boss,” said Lane. “And when they first asked me, I thought, ‘No, this is crazy.’  But then I thought, so many people say to me, ‘You and Bruce…it’s like you were separated at birth! You’re both Jersey boys, you’ve spent your lives on the stage, you both have that every-man quality. Women want you, men want to be you!’”

So, what’s the hardest part about being Springsteen’s understudy? According to Lane, it’s the wardrobe.

“The hardest part is squeezing into those vests,” said Lane. “He’s a 71-year-old man that dresses like a newsie!”
