Nine Inch Nails are making waves in music history! The band, led by Trent Reznor, has become just the fourth act ever to appear on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart in five different decades: the ’80s, ’90s, 2000s, 2010s, and now the 2020s. They’ve made their mark in the 2020s with their new single, “As Alive as You Need Me to Be,” which is part of the Tron: Ares movie soundtrack.
NIN joins the ranks of Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, and Depeche Mode as the only other artists to achieve this milestone. It’s worth noting that the Alternative Airplay chart started in 1988, so there wasn’t much time for bands to chart in the ’80s.
Two other bands, Beastie Boys and Jane’s Addiction, have also charted in the ’80s, ’90s, 2000s, and 2010s. They could join the five-decade club if they release new music before 2030. However, it seems unlikely since the Beastie Boys have been inactive since Adam Yauch’s passing in 2012, and Jane’s Addiction disbanded in 2024 after an onstage incident.
The Tron: Ares soundtrack will drop on September 19, and while Reznor often collaborates with Atticus Ross on film scores, this project is being highlighted as a Nine Inch Nails release. The movie hits theaters on October 10. Get ready for some exciting new music!
