At the time of its release, Latifah was already making waves in both music and acting. She starred in films like House Party 2 and Juice, and she was the lead in the popular Fox sitcom Living Single. Musically, she was part of the Native Tongues movement, collaborating with artists like De La Soul and Monie Love on her debut album, All Hail The Queen. Her 1991 album, Nature of a Sista, had also set the stage for her success.
Black Reign marked a significant moment in hip-hop history. It became the first album by a solo female rapper to be certified Gold by the RIAA. The lead single “U.N.I.T.Y.” was her first to hit the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance. The song, which samples Desmond Dekker’s “Unity,” delivered a strong message about respecting women in hip-hop and society.
Following “U.N.I.T.Y.,” tracks like “Just Another Day…” and “Weekend Love” also made their way onto the charts. Critics have praised Black Reign for its bold lyrics and powerful themes. BET even called it Latifah’s best work, highlighting her skills on tracks like “Rough” featuring KRS-One and “Superstar.”
