Sam Fender Earns Second No.1 Album With ‘Seventeen Going Under’

Sam Fender’s new album Seventeen Going Under has officially debuted at No.1 in the UK, earning him his second No.1 record.

In the first week since its release on October 8, it has amassed 44,000 sales, of which 79 percent were physical purchases, in the fifth-biggest opening weekend of 2021. He has also outsold the rest of the Top 10 combined.

Seventeen Going Under also claimed the top spot on the Official Vinyl Albums Chart and is also the biggest selling new release in independent record shops this week.

“This is pure lethal!” the North Shields-born singer-songwriter told the Official Charts Company when he learned of the news. “Absolutely buzzing. Big love to my band and team – without them it would not be possible.”

Seventeen Going Under has also exceeded the first-week sales of Fender’s debut album Hypersonic Missiles, which also debuted at No.1 back in 2019 with 41,000 sales. It has since returned to the Album Charts and currently sits at number 39. Seventeen Going Under was also met with critical acclaim upon release.

“The North Shields songwriter replaces his former broad-brush politicking with rousing but arrestingly bleak, personal material that puts his indie-rock peers in the shade,” writes The Guardian.

It was announced last week, just prior to the album’s release, that Fender will be touring UK arenas in his “biggest tour ever” in March and April 2022. He has since added two extra dates, including a second night at London’s Wembley Arena on April 2, and a second hometown show in Newcastle on April 6. He will also be playing a sold-out run of intimate release shows in December in partnership with independent record stores.
