Stewart Copeland Says The Police ‘Didn’t Think About The Fans’ When Writing Music

The Police have a lean catalog, but it’s still packed with hits. Considering that, you’d think the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame trio kept their fans’ tastes in mind, but that wasn’t really the case.

When asked about how their hits impacted The Police’s desire to reach certain kinds of music fans, drummer Stewart Copeland told Ultimate Classic Rock, “Well, maybe it’s a bit selfish, but we didn’t think about the fans all that much. We thought about what we considered to be cool. If a fanbase grew around whatever we came up with, great. There’s a certain amount of arrogance in that. It seems to be working for us to just follow our instincts, so hey, let’s keep doing that.

Copeland is currently working on a new book that focuses on the early days of The Police. So far, the currently untitled book is slated for release in early 2022. This will be Copeland’s second book on The Police; his first, Strange Things Happen: A Life with The Police, Polo and Pygmies, was originally published in 2009.
