The Battleship New Jersey: A Floating Museum

Residents of South Jersey and Philadelphia often cross the Ben Franklin Bridge, taking in the stunning city skyline and the concert venue on the Jersey side. But how many know about the floating museum on the Camden Waterfront? The Battleship New Jersey is a tribute to US veterans, offering history lessons through tours and interactive experiences. It also hosts events for everyone in the Philadelphia area.

The USS New Jersey is the most decorated battleship in US Navy history. Built in South Philadelphia after Pearl Harbor, it was commissioned in 1942 during World War II. The ship has traveled more miles, fought in more battles, and fired more shells than any other battleship, serving until its last commission in 1991.

Admiral Raymond A. Spruance made the USS New Jersey his flagship after his heroics at the Battle of Midway. The ship played key roles in battles at Iwo Jima and Okinawa, and it served during the Korean War, Vietnam War, and conflicts in the Middle East.

Opened as a memorial in October 2001, the Battleship New Jersey honors those who served in the Navy. Visitors can take guided tours of the 887-foot ship, see the same weaponry used in combat, and even experience overnight stays like the sailors did.

Tours cover four areas:
– Introductory Tour Weapons & Navigation
– Crew’s Life
– Into the Citadel

The Battleship New Jersey is open 363 days a year from 10 AM to 5:30 PM and hosts both private and public events. It’s a must-visit for history buffs and music lovers alike!
