The Post Office Holiday Rush Is Here: USPS Gears Up for Its Busiest Week of 2025

If you’ve been delaying sending that holiday package, now’s the time to act. Next week is the busiest of the year for mailing, with millions of gifts, cards, and letters on the move. Since December 1, foot traffic at local Post Offices has been rising as people rush to drop off last-minute packages before the holiday deadlines hit.

To make sure your gifts arrive by Christmas, the Postal Service recommends mailing by December 17 for First-Class Mail and USPS Ground Advantage, December 18 for Priority Mail, and December 20 for Priority Mail Express. Keep in mind that Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories have earlier deadlines. Post Offices will be closed on Christmas Day (December 25) and New Year’s Day (January 1, 2026), with regular mail delivery resuming the following Fridays.

The Postal Service has been gearing up for this busy season since January. They’ve added over 600 new package sorters since 2020, boosting daily handling from 60 million to 88 million items. Many packages can now travel across regions in just two to three days. They’ve also hired about 14,000 seasonal workers this year to keep up with demand.

Whether you’re sending a care package or a simple card, USPS has various service options to fit your needs. Most shipments come with free tracking and $100 of insurance. Plus, they offer online videos to help you pack and address your boxes safely. This year, they’re expanding Sunday deliveries in busy areas and will even deliver Priority Mail Express on Christmas Day for an extra fee. So, if you’re heading out with gifts this week, it’s the perfect time to get them in the mail!
