This Day in Sports History: August 20

August is a huge month for sports fans. There’s MLB action, the U.S. Open Tennis Championship, the start of the Premier League, WWE events, the NASCAR Cup Series, track and field meets, and the first week of college football. Over the years, August 20 has seen many memorable sports moments. Here are some highlights.

In 1888, Palmer Presbrey won a tough first-round match in U.S. men’s singles tennis. Fast forward to 1912, Walter Johnson set an AL record with his 15th straight win. In 1919, Joe Wilhoit’s hitting streak ended at 69 games. Molla Bjurstedt Mallory claimed her sixth U.S. National Championships title in 1921, while Helen Wills Moody won her seventh title in 1931.

Baseball Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig hit his final grand slam in 1938. Bob Hamilton won the PGA Championship in 1944, and in 1957, Bob Keegan pitched a no-hitter. The Philadelphia Phillies ended a 23-game losing streak in 1961. Kathy Whitworth won the LPGA Western Open in 1967.

Dwight Gooden made history in 1985 by becoming the first NL pitcher to strike out 200 batters in his first two seasons. He also struck out 16 batters in a game that year. Tiger Woods won his second PGA Championship in 2000 and his third in 2006. In 2008, Usain Bolt set a world record in the 200-meter race.

In 2023, Spain beat England 1-0 to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final. Three athletes stand out: Helen Wills Moody, Dwight Gooden, and Tiger Woods. Each made a significant mark in their sports, showcasing talent and determination.
