This Day in Top 40 History: September 17

On September 17, 2011, Adele’s hit “Someone Like You” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of nine weeks. This song was the second single from her album, 21, and it climbed to the top after her amazing performance at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Looking back at music history on this date, here are some highlights:

In 2016, The Chainsmokers and Halsey topped the charts with their electropop anthem “Closer,” which has since become a club favorite. Fast forward to 2022, when Harry Styles released his much-anticipated album, Harry’s House. By September 17, two of his songs, “As It Was” and “Late Night Talking,” were in the top three.

Notable performances on this date include The Beatles in 1964, who earned $150,000 for a concert in Kansas City, the highest amount paid to any act at that time. In 1974, Bob Dylan recorded “Shelter from the Storm” and “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” for his album Blood on the Tracks. Queen made headlines in 1978 with a unique bicycle race at Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium featuring 65 nude models.

In 1997, Fleetwood Mac kicked off their first tour in 20 years in Connecticut, which led to the live album The Dance. More recently, in 2022, Lady Gaga had to cut her final show of The Chromatica Ball tour short due to a severe lightning storm, prioritizing fan safety.

On this day, Harry Styles, Adele, and Halsey all had No. 1 songs, and Fleetwood Mac was back on tour after two decades.
