Summer Reading for Kids: Join The Great Reading Tournament by 311Literacy

As summer approaches and school winds down, parents and educators everywhere start asking: How can we keep kids reading and learning all summer long? Enter 311Literacy’s latest initiative-The Great Reading Tournament-a fun, free, and easy way to keep young minds engaged while beating the dreaded “summer slide”.

What Is The Great Reading Tournament?

Hosted by nonprofit 311Literacy and proudly sponsored by Canva, The Great Reading Tournament (TGRT) is an international summer reading contest for kids ages 6 to 14. Registration is now open, and the competition runs from June 15th to July 19th. The goal? Motivate kids to read as much as possible, with the chance to win awesome prizes like laptops and tablets.

TGRT offers access to over 10,000 free books in both English and Spanish, making it perfect for bilingual families and those looking to boost their child’s language skills. Whether your child prefers fantasy, adventure, or graphic novels, there’s something for everyone.

How Does It Work?

Getting started is simple:

  • Sign up for free on the TGRT platform.
  • Kids take a quick reading assessment to find books at their level.
  • Choose from thousands of age-appropriate titles in English or Spanish.
  • The platform automatically tracks reading minutes, pages, books read, and comprehension-no extra work for parents or teachers!
  • Kids can compete individually or as part of a team, and the contest is fully portable for summer travel or camp.

Why Join the Tournament?

Summer reading is proven to help students retain and even boost literacy skills gained during the school year, preventing the typical academic dip known as “summer slide.” But the real magic happens when kids get to choose books that interest them-making reading a joy, not a chore.

TGRT’s impact speaks for itself: In the last three competitions, 41,000 children from five countries read more than 4 million minutes and 150,000 books. Even better, nearly 30% of participants kept reading after the tournament ended.

A Global Celebration of Reading

This summer, kids from the U.S., Latin America, and even Asia will join together in discovering the joy of reading. As Ariadna Trapote, CEO of 311Literacy, puts it: “It’s a beautiful reminder that stories connect us all, no matter where we’re from”.
