Cape May County Zoo Welcomes Male Grant’s Zebra Foal to the Herd

On May 21, the Cape May County Zoo celebrated an exciting addition to its Grant’s zebra herd—a male foal born to proud parents Lydia and Ziggy! This adorable newcomer is the first male zebra foal born at the zoo in recent years, making his arrival extra special for both staff and visitors, according to a press release from the Cape May County Zoo.

If you stop by the zebra yard, you might catch the little foal napping, nursing, or even playing alongside the rest of the herd. Watching him explore his new world is a treat for guests of all ages.

Commissioner Andrew Bulakowski, Vice Director and liaison to the Parks and Zoo, shared his excitement about the zoo’s newest family member. “His arrival is another reason to celebrate and to acknowledge the dedication of our Zoo staff, who provide exceptional care for the animals,” Bulakowski said. “I encourage everyone to visit the Zoo to see the new arrival, and experience one of Cape May County’s greatest treasures.”

Grant’s zebras are a subspecies of the Plains zebra, native to central and eastern Africa. Known for their striking black-and-white stripes, these zebras have a 13-month gestation period. Amazingly, foals are up and running within an hour of birth, ready to join the herd’s daily adventures.

The Cape May County Park & Zoo is open every day, with zoo hours from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and park hours from 7 a.m. until dusk. Don’t miss your chance to see the playful new zebra foal and enjoy one of South Jersey’s top family attractions!
