Exodus Guitarist Claims His Band Surpasses Thrash Metal’s Big Four

Exodus guitarist Gary Holt has made a bold statement, claiming that his band is better than metal legends Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax. “We’re better than all of them! I know it sounds egotistical, but just listen to our records—we’ll crush them all,” he said. However, Holt emphasized that rankings don’t matter to Exodus. “I’ve never worried about any of that stuff. Big Four, Big Five, Big Ten… it’s not our focus.”

Exodus formed in 1979 and was already making waves by 1981, well before Metallica had even started. Holt pointed out the band’s strong songwriting process and expressed a desire to finish more songs to keep upcoming projects on track. He also praised Metallica’s classic album, Master of Puppets, calling it the greatest metal album ever made, and gave a nod to And Justice for All as well.

The band stays true to their own style. “We don’t care if anyone likes it at all. We write every album for ourselves,” Holt explained. Their next release will be split into two separate records, featuring 18 tracks. Holt hinted that the new album will include a mix of fast, heavy, and slow songs, with some surprises in store.

Over the years, Exodus has evolved their sound. Their 1992 album, Force of Habit, aimed for mainstream appeal, but since Tempo of the Damned in 2004, they’ve returned to their raw roots. The new material combines high-speed riffs with heavy, slow sections, following their 2021 release, Persona Non Grata. The release date for the upcoming albums is still a mystery, but fans are eagerly waiting.
