Machine Gun Kelly (MGK) has released a fun, dance-filled video for his new single “cliché.” The video, part of the Vevo Footnotes series, reveals behind-the-scenes stories and inspirations. When the video dropped in May, fans loved its playful take on pop video clichés, especially the entertaining dance routines created with choreographer Sean Bankhead.
In the new Vevo Footnotes clip, director Sam Cahill and MGK share insights about the video. MGK talks about the opening carwash scene, which pays homage to blink-182’s “All The Small Things.” He mentions it was filmed at the same car wash where Britney Spears shot “Pretty Girl” a decade ago. “We wanted ‘cliché’ to feel like a summer song, and that led us to the car wash,” MGK explains.
Cahill discusses the choreography for the truck bed scene. They initially planned to film it practically, but that would have limited the dancers’ movements. Instead, they used a green screen, allowing everyone to perform the choreography as intended.
The final scene features MGK and a woman dancing in a motel parking lot in the rain. MGK laughs about how cold it was that day, making the “sexy” vibe they aimed for quite funny in retrospect.
Produced by MGK along with SlimXX, BazeXX, Nick Long, and No Love for the Middle Child, “cliché” blends synth-pop and pop-punk sounds. MGK reveals that when he wrote the song on his guitar with friends, it actually sounded like a country song. “cliché” is the lead single from his upcoming album, Lost Americana, set to release on August 8.
