This Day in Sports History: August 22

August is a great month for sports fans. There’s MLB action, the U.S. Open Tennis Championship, the start of the Premier League, WWE events, NASCAR, track and field meets, and the first week of college football. August 22 has seen some amazing sports moments over the years. Here are a few highlights.

In 1885, Richard Sears won the U.S. National Men’s Singles Championships for the fifth year in a row. Fast forward to 1946, when Mikko Hietanen won the men’s marathon at the European Athletics Championships in Oslo with a time of 2:24:55.

In 1950, Althea Gibson made history as the first African American to compete in the U.S. National Championships. By 1989, Nolan Ryan reached a milestone with his 5,000th career strikeout.

In 2007, the Texas Rangers scored a whopping 30 runs against the Baltimore Orioles, setting a modern MLB record. Just a year later, Maurren Higa Maggi won Brazil’s first gold medal in a women’s individual event at the Olympics.

Looking back, three athletes stand out: Richard Sears, Nolan Ryan, and Fred Funk. Sears was known for his aggressive playing style, often rushing the net to finish points. Nolan Ryan holds the record for the most strikeouts in MLB history with 5,714. Fred Funk won his last Champions Tour major by just one stroke in 2010.
