What to Expect from Pennsylvania’s Weather this Winter

Winter planning is key, especially for those in colder areas with snow and ice. Even in warmer regions, winters can surprise us with unexpected chills. This year, autumn kicks off on September 22, and winter starts on December 21. As we approach winter, we’re getting insights into what to expect.

In July, a popular weather guide shared its fall predictions for 2025, forecasting a warmer-than-average season for most of the U.S. However, they also warned of droughts in places like California, Florida, and Maine. Now, they’ve released their winter forecast, predicting a season of “dramatic swings and widespread wintry weather.” This is a shift from last winter, which was expected to be milder.

This winter, expect a “chill, snow, repeat” pattern. Some areas might see cold and snow as early as September. The coldest weather is expected from the Northern Plains to New England and the Pacific Northwest, along with the Midwest. They’re also predicting above-average precipitation, leading to impressive snowfall in regions like New England and the Midwest. For Pennsylvania, brace for a “cold” and “snow-filled” season—great news for snow lovers!

How accurate are these predictions? They claim an 80 to 85% success rate based on a formula created back in 1818. Meanwhile, another weather agency predicts a warmer-than-normal winter for much of the U.S., except for the northernmost areas. So, whether you’re dreaming of snow or hoping for warmth, it looks like winter will be interesting this year!
