Jackie McLean’s ‘One Step Beyond’ Album Reissued for Music Collectors

Jackie McLean’s 1963 album *One Step Beyond* is getting a reissue from Blue Note as part of its Classic Vinyl Reissue Series. The album will be available on November 21. This new edition is in stereo, all-analog, and mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes. It will be pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.

Inspired by Ornette Coleman, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean explored the avant-garde while keeping his soulful swing. With *One Step Beyond*, he created a unique sound with a standout quintet that includes trombonist Grachan Moncur III, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, bassist Eddie Kahn, and drummer Tony Williams.

In the original liner notes, McLean mentioned that all the tracks on the album are original compositions. He noted that these arrangements were first performed at the Coronet, a venue in Brooklyn. McLean highlighted Moncur’s contributions, “Frankenstein” and “Ghost Town.” He described “Frankenstein” as “one of the most beautiful jazz waltzes ever written,” contrasting its beauty with the character it represents.

The album also features two tracks by McLean. “Saturday and Sunday” showcases different melodies reflecting the energy of each day, while “Blue Rondo” came from a practice session with Moncur.

McLean recorded 21 albums for Blue Note between 1959 and 1967. Earlier this year, his 1965 album *Jacknife* was re-released in Blue Note’s Tone Poet series. Other notable albums from this era include *Let Freedom Ring* (1962), *It’s Time!* (1965), and *Action* (1967).
