This Day in Rock History: October 18

Oct. 18 is a big day in rock history, filled with important events. It’s the day Paul McCartney took his first step toward becoming a Beatle and when The Jimi Hendrix Experience played their first show. Here’s a look at some key moments from this day.

In 1957, Paul McCartney made his live debut with The Quarrymen, the band that would eventually become The Beatles. This was the first time he and John Lennon played music together.

In 1966, The Jimi Hendrix Experience had their first major gig at the Paris Olympia Theatre, opening for French star Johnny Hallyday. They had performed a few days earlier at the Novelty cinema in Evreux, France.

Oct. 18 also marks the birthdays and milestones of rock legends. In 1926, Chuck Berry was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He became a key figure in rock ‘n’ roll, known for hits like “Maybellene” and “Johnny B. Goode.”

In 1989, Guns N’ Roses opened for The Rolling Stones at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. This concert was historic, not just for the two bands sharing the stage, but also because Axl Rose threatened to break up the band if the members didn’t stop using drugs and alcohol.

Several memorable albums were released on this day too. In 1974, The Rolling Stones released “It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll,” their last album with guitarist Mick Taylor. In 1985, The Cult released “Love,” which helped them gain mainstream success. In 1988, the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys released their debut album, “Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1,” which went triple-Platinum in the U.S.

Oct. 18 is a day to celebrate for rock fans, with legends like The Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney making history. Stay tuned for more exciting rock events!
