This Day in Top 40 History: November 24

November 24 is a significant date for music fans and artists alike. In 2009, Donny Osmond and his partner Kym Johnson won the crown on the season nine finale of Dancing with the Stars. Osmond is known for hits like “Puppy Love” and “Go Away Little Girl.”

Several important music events also happened on this date. In 1987, Keith Sweat released his debut album, Make It Last Forever. It featured new jack swing tracks, including “I Want Her,” which hit No. 5 on the Hot 100. The title track peaked at No. 2 on the Hot R&B Songs chart.

In 1998, Metallica released Garage Inc., a double album with 27 tracks. It sold over 5 million copies and included hits like “Turn the Page,” which topped Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart. “Whiskey in the Jar” reached No. 4 and won a GRAMMY in 2000.

Kanye West dropped 808s & Heartbreak in 2008, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 450,000 copies in its first week. Singles like “Love Lockdown” and “Heartless” also made waves on the charts.

Culturally, November 24 has its highlights. In 1979, Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand’s “No More Tears (Enough is Enough)” became the first female duet to top the Hot 100, marking a milestone for women in music. In 2019, Taylor Swift shone at the American Music Awards, winning six awards, including Artist of the Decade.

Sadly, this date also marks the loss of some artists. In 1991, Freddie Mercury of Queen passed away from AIDS-related pneumonia. That same year, Eric Carr of KISS died from cancer at 41. Both left a lasting impact on the music world.
