This Day in Rock History: November 29

Nov. 29 is a special day for rock fans. We celebrate Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” reaching the top of the charts. It’s also a sad day as we remember George Harrison, who passed away 24 years ago. Here are the key moments from this day in rock history.

In 1975, Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” hit No. 1 on the U.K. singles charts, where it stayed for nine weeks. It made a sensational return to the top in 1991 after the death of Freddie Mercury.

In 1986, Bon Jovi scored their first No. 1 single in the U.S. with “You Give Love a Bad Name.” Co-written by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, and Desmond Child, this song marked a turning point for the band and remains one of their most famous tracks.

On this day, we also remember the birth of a music legend. John Mayall was born in 1933 in Macclesfield, England. He formed John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers in the 1960s and helped popularize British blues, launching the careers of guitar greats like Eric Clapton and Peter Green.

In 2001, we lost George Harrison to cancer. He had a successful solo career after the Beatles and is celebrated as one of the best guitarists ever.

Nov. 29 also marks some memorable recordings. In 1963, the Beatles released “I Want to Hold Your Hand” in the U.K., debuting at No. 2 on the charts. In 1982, Metallica played their first headlining show at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco.

These are the top rock events from Nov. 29. Check back tomorrow to see what happened on this day in rock history!
