This Day in Top 40 History: December 15

On December 15, 1986, the Grateful Dead performed for the first time since Jerry Garcia’s diabetic coma earlier that year. They kicked off their show at the Oakland Coliseum Arena with “Touch of Grey,” which had hit No. 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and reached No. 9 on the Hot 100. This date has also seen other significant events in music history, including album releases and weddings.

Notable albums released on December 15 include:

– 1992: Dr. Dre released his debut solo album, *The Chronic*, through Death Row Records and Interscope. It peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and spent over 90 weeks on the chart. The album featured hits like “Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang.”

– 2014: Nicki Minaj dropped her third studio album, *The Pinkprint*, featuring artists like Lil Wayne and Beyoncé. It debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and included hits such as “Pills N Potions” and “Anaconda.”

– 2017: Eminem’s ninth album, *Revival*, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking his eighth consecutive No. 1 release. The track “Walk on Water,” featuring Beyoncé, reached the Top 20 on the Hot 100.

December 15 has also seen cultural moments:

– 1984: Olivia Newton-John married Matt Lattanzi.
– 1990: Rod Stewart married supermodel Rachel Hunter.
– 2007: Celine Dion ended her *A New Day…* residency in Las Vegas after five years.

Sadly, the music industry has faced challenges on this date too. In 1988, James Brown was sentenced to over six years in prison for assault. He was released in 1991 after serving nearly half of his sentence.
