Motley Crue Guitarist John 5 Discusses Rock Hall Exclusion After Years of Eligibility

John 5 is puzzled about why Motley Crue hasn’t been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame yet. The band became eligible nearly 20 years ago, but they still haven’t received the call. John 5 joined the band’s touring lineup in late 2022 after Mick Mars stepped back from performing.

“I have no idea. If it were up to me, I’d have them in the Hall of Fame the day after the 25 years,” John 5 said. “They deserve it so much. It’s all about influence, right? So many musicians and bands have been inspired by Motley Crue. It’s a real head-scratcher.”

Bands can be inducted into the Rock Hall 25 years after their first album is released. Motley Crue hit that milestone in 2007, but they’re still waiting. The 2025 class includes artists like Bad Company, Joe Cocker, Chubby Checker, Soundgarden, White Stripes, Cyndi Lauper, and Outkast. To get in, at least half of the 1,200 voters—who are artists, historians, and music industry professionals—must say yes. Each year, five to seven performers are inducted.

Nikki Sixx has previously expressed his thoughts on the Hall of Fame, saying, “The only award I look forward to getting is the one I will probably decline, and that’s the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It’s a fixed old-boy network that has lost touch with art and influential music.”

John 5 joined the band after Mars filed a lawsuit against Sixx, Neil, and Tommy Lee, claiming they cheated him out of money. Since then, John 5 has faced criticism online about his playing style but has stood his ground.
