2025 Music Year Recap: After scandal, Dave Grohl rejoins Nirvana to battle Foo Fighters again

In 2024, Dave Grohl’s reputation as the “nicest guy in rock” took a hit when he revealed he had a child outside his marriage. After stepping back from the spotlight and canceling shows, he made a comeback in 2025, reviving the Foo Fighters with some exciting surprises.

One highlight was the reunion of Grohl with his Nirvana bandmates, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear, at the FireAid benefit concert in January. They performed alongside guest vocalists St. Vincent, Kim Gordon, Joan Jett, and Grohl’s daughter, Violet. The reformed Nirvana played again in February during Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special, featuring Post Malone on vocals for “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

Grohl made surprise appearances at various shows, including Coachella, before the Foo Fighters announced their first concert after the scandal: a show in Singapore set for October. Shortly after, drummer Josh Freese was let go, with Freese stating the band wanted to “go in a different direction” without giving a reason.

Despite the drama, the Foo Fighters hinted at a comeback, announcing more shows in Asia and teasing new music. In late June, they released a cover of Minor Threat’s “I Don’t Wanna Hear It,” followed by an original single, “Today’s Song,” in early July.

In July, Ilan Rubin from Nine Inch Nails was announced as the new drummer. Freese, meanwhile, rejoined NIN after previously playing with them from 2005 to 2008. The Foo Fighters confirmed Rubin’s addition with a surprise concert in September in San Luis Obispo, California, followed by more pop-up shows across the U.S.

In October, they released a new single, “Asking for a Friend,” and announced a U.S. stadium tour with Queens of the Stone Age for 2026. After a rocky period, Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters are back in action!
