January at Eastern State: Honoring Dr. King and Exploring Civil Rights in America

January at Eastern State Penitentiary is all about reflection and action as it honors Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the ongoing fight for civil rights in America. Visitors can join virtual talks, guided tours, and hands-on activities to explore how the nation’s founding ideals connect to the struggles for justice and equality today.

Kicking off the month is “Justice 101: The Civil Rights Movement,” happening online on Wednesday, January 14, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. This discussion features legal scholar Dorothy E. Roberts from the University of Pennsylvania and Eastern State’s President, Dr. Kerry Sautner. They’ll dive into civil rights movements and the quest for fairness in the justice system, highlighting key moments and figures that fought for rights like religious freedom and humane conditions. It’s a chance to rethink what civil rights mean, especially for those behind bars. Registration for this free event is available online.

From January 17 to 19, Eastern State hosts “The Civil Rights Movement: Finding Justice Weekend,” celebrating Dr. King’s legacy. Visitors can take part in a self-guided tour from January 9 to 28, showcasing the voices of civil rights leaders and incarcerated individuals. This tour connects their struggles to the broader fight for equality in the U.S.

During the MLK weekend, the Guide-Led Tour & Discussion will feature special content about Eastern State’s ties to the Civil Rights Movement. Join in from January 17 to 19 at noon for an engaging experience that highlights the promises of freedom and equality. Don’t miss out on this powerful month of reflection and action!
