Challenger Center Honors 40th Anniversary of Challenger Crew

On Wednesday, we remember the 40th anniversary of the Challenger STS-51L tragedy, which occurred on January 28, 1986. The Challenger Center is kicking off its commemoration of this significant event. The Challenger STS-51L was NASA’s 25th Space Shuttle mission and the final flight of the Challenger. Just seconds after launch, a structural failure led to the destruction of the orbiter, claiming the lives of all seven crew members. This incident remains a heartbreaking moment in American history.

Throughout 2026, the Challenger Center and its learning centers will honor the legacy of the Challenger crew. They will host various events to celebrate four decades of inspiring students through hands-on STEM learning. Expect educational resources and activities aimed at empowering the next generation.

“As we approach this anniversary, we remember the Challenger crew not just for their loss, but for what they represented,” said Mike Kincaid, President of Challenger Center. “For 40 years, we’ve turned inspiration into action, helping students see themselves as problem-solvers and innovators.”

This year also marks the launch of the Challenger-7 Recognition, which will honor organizations that embody the spirit of the Challenger crew. Kincaid added, “The future of our STEM workforce relies on today’s students. This anniversary is a moment to reflect and look forward.”
